چکیده

Verification of theoretical predictions of an oscillating behavior of the fine-structure constant α (≡ e 2 /¯ hc) with cosmic time requires high precision ∆α/α measurements at individual redshifts, while in earlier studies the mean ∆α/α values averaged over wide redshift intervals were usually reported. This requirement can be met via the single ion differential α measurement (SIDAM) procedure proposed in Levshakov et al. (2005). We apply the SIDAM to the Fe ii lines associated with the damped Lyα system observed at z abs = 1.15 in the spectrum of HE 0515–4414. The weighted mean ∆α/α calculated on base of carefully selected 34 Fe ii pairs {λ1608, X} (X = 2344, 2374, and 2586Å) is ∆α/α = (−0.07 ± 0.84) × 10 −6 (1σ C.L.). The precision of this estimate improves by a factor 2 the previous one reported for the same system by Quast et al. (2004). The obtained result represents an absolute improvement with respect to what has been done in the measurements of ∆α/α .

Analysis of a Dominant Retailer Dual-Channel Supply Chain under Customers’ Channel Preference: The α-Branch and Bound Solution Algorithm

This paper investigates the Stackelberg equilibrium for pricing and ordering decisions in a dominant retailer dual-channel supply chain. In a dual-channel sales network, the products are sold through both a traditional, physical retailer and a direct Internet channel. It is assumed that the retailer is the leader and the powerful member of the supply chain has the market power and acts as a lea...

The Scatter in the Relationship between Redshift and the Radio-to-Submm Spectral Index

We derive the scatter in the relationship between redshift and radio-tosubmm spectral index, α 1.4 , using the observed spectral energy distributions of 17 low redshift star forming galaxies. A mean galaxy model is derived, along with the rms scatter in α 1.4 . The scatter is roughly constant with redshift. Constant rms scatter, combined with the flattening of the mean α 1.4 – z relationship wi...

Ly α Cloud Size Evolution and Shape from QSO Groups

We present results from Keck HIRES, KPNO 4m/RC Spec and HST FOS spectra of a low-redshift, close QSO pair and a close, higher-redshift QSO triplet in order to explore the size evolution, shape and clustering of Ly α absorbers. The results we highlight here indicate that there is no strong evidence for evolution of Ly α cloud size with redshift, that strong (Wo > 0.4Å) Ly α forest absorbers are ...

A new measure of ∆ α / α at redshift z = 1 . 84 from very high resolution spectra of Q 1101 – 264 ⋆ ( Research Note )

Astronomy & Astrophysics A new measure of ∆α/α at redshift z = 1.84 from very high resolution spectra of Q 1101–264 ⋆ ABSTRACT Aims. We probe the evolution of the fine-structure constant α with cosmic time. Methods. Accurate positions of the Fe ii lines λ1608, λ2382, and λ2600 are measured in the z abs = 1.84 absorption system from a high-resolution (F W HM ∼ 3.8 km s −1) and high signal-to-noi...

The Abundance of Low-luminosity Lyman Α Emitters at High Redshift

We derive the luminosity function of high-redshift Lyman α emitting sources from a deep, blind, spectroscopic survey that utilized strong-lensing magnification by intermediate-redshift clusters of galaxies. We observed carefully selected regions near 9 clusters, consistent with magnification factors generally greater than 10 for the redshift range 4.5< z <6.7. Eleven emission-line candidates we...
